Fox ESS system compatibility guide
Compare the main Fox ESS system families by application, required components, and expansion path. Confirm the exact inverter, battery, gateway, electrical code, and utility requirements before installation.
| Fox ESS family | Best use case | System components | When to choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerQ AIO | Integrated residential solar, battery storage, and whole-home or partial-home backup. | PowerQ 11.4kW hybrid inverter, EQ4000 battery modules, and Smart Hub G2. | Choose PowerQ when you want an integrated modular stack and a simplified installation path. |
| H1 + ECS4000 | Modular residential storage with a wall-mounted split-phase hybrid inverter. | Compatible H1 inverter, one CM4000 master plus 1-5 CS4000 modules (2-6 modules total), and Smart Hub G2 for backup operation. Current bundles use 3-5 modules. | Choose H1 plus ECS4000 when you prefer separate inverter and battery equipment or need ECS battery expansion. |
| Smart Hub G2 | Backup transfer, smart-load management, and supported generator integration. | Use only with a qualified Fox ESS PowerQ or H1 plus ECS4000 configuration. | Choose Smart Hub G2 when outage backup or managed loads are part of the system design. |
| H3 + CQ7 commercial storage | 208V or 480V three-phase commercial and industrial solar-plus-storage projects. | Select H3 three-phase hybrid inverter models and CQ7 master/sub battery modules according to the engineered system design. | Choose this family for C&I projects that require three-phase hybrid inverter capacity and modular commercial storage. |
Fox ESS frequently asked questions
Clear answers about PowerQ, H1, ECS4000, Smart Hub G2, capacity expansion, compatibility, certification, and backup operation.
What does a Fox ESS PowerQ all-in-one system include?
A PowerQ system typically combines a compatible 11.4kW split-phase hybrid inverter, EQ4000 battery modules, and Smart Hub G2 backup and energy-management hardware. Exact bundle contents vary by product, so review the bill of materials on the product page before ordering.
What is the difference between the 8-20 kWh and up-to-80 kWh PowerQ capacity figures?
One PowerQ stack holds 2 to 5 EQ4000 modules at 3.97 kWh each, so a single stack ranges from 7.94 kWh to 19.85 kWh. Up to 4 stacks can be paralleled in one system, which is where the 79.4 kWh (rounded to 80 kWh) figure comes from. Each stack needs its own PowerQ inverter; the Smart Hub G2 coordinates multi-stack systems.
What is the difference between ECS CM4000 and CS4000 battery modules?
The CM4000 is the master battery module and includes the battery-management system. CS4000 modules are expansion modules. A supported ECS4000 stack uses one CM4000 master plus one to five CS4000 modules, for two to six modules total; current Self2Solar bundles are H3, H4, and H5 configurations with three to five modules.
Can PowerQ EQ4000 and ECS4000 battery modules be mixed?
No. PowerQ EQ4000 and ECS4000 are different battery families and should not be combined in the same battery stack. Match replacement or expansion modules to the exact existing system family.
How is PowerQ different from an H1 plus ECS4000 system?
PowerQ is an integrated all-in-one family in which the compatible inverter and EQ4000 modules form a coordinated stack. An H1 plus ECS4000 system uses a separately mounted H1 hybrid inverter connected to an ECS4000 battery stack built from CM4000 and CS4000 modules. The two battery families are not interchangeable.
Which battery works with Fox ESS H1 hybrid inverters?
Current Self2Solar H1 residential configurations are paired with qualified Fox ESS ECS4000 high-voltage battery systems. Compatibility and listing status depend on the exact H1 model, battery configuration, firmware, and system design; verify the product manual and system listing before purchase.
Can an existing H1 grid-tied system be upgraded for battery backup?
Potentially. A compatible ECS4000 battery stack, Smart Hub G2, approved wiring, transfer equipment, firmware, and a code-compliant load plan may be required. Have a qualified installer verify the existing H1 model and site electrical design before adding backup equipment.
What does Fox ESS Smart Hub G2 do?
Smart Hub G2 provides backup transfer and energy-management functions for qualified Fox ESS systems, including managed loads and supported generator integration. A grid-tied PV-only system may not need it, while an outage-backup design generally requires the approved gateway and transfer architecture.
Are Fox ESS systems UL9540 certified and CEC listed?
Yes for the residential systems sold here. The PowerQ AIO system carries UL 9540 system certification with UL 1973 batteries and a UL 1741 inverter. The H1 + ECS4000 system carries UL 9540 with UL 9540A-tested ECS4000 batteries and a UL 1741 H1 inverter. Both are on the California Energy Commission list. Certificates are linked on each product page; confirm the exact model numbers against the CEC list before permitting.
What warranty applies to Fox ESS products?
H1 inverters and ECS4000 batteries carry a 12.5-year manufacturer warranty. PowerQ inverters and EQ4000 modules carry the warranty stated on their product page. Register the system with Fox ESS after commissioning and keep the invoice and serial numbers; warranty terms are set by Fox ESS US and may require registration within a set period.
Which Fox ESS products are intended for commercial three-phase projects?
The H3 Plus family includes 208V and 480V three-phase hybrid inverter models for commercial and industrial applications. CQ7 master and sub battery modules support modular commercial storage configurations. Final sizing and compatibility require an engineered design for the exact voltage, inverter model, battery quantity, and site load profile.
