Tesla Powerwall 3 is a fully integrated solar and battery system that stores energy from solar production. It converts energy from solar panels or Solar Roof, and its rechargeable battery pack provides energy storage for solar selfconsumption, load shifting, or off-grid use. Powerwall 3 is installed with Backup Switch, Backup Gateway 2, or Gateway 3 to control the system's connection to the grid and monitor home energy consumption. Up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units can be installed to provide additional storage.
Powerwall 3 achieves this by supporting up to 20 kW DC of solar and providing up to 11.5 kW AC of continuous power per unit. It has the ability to start heavy loads rated up to 185 LRA, meaning a single unit can support the power needs of most homes. Powerwall 3 Expansions make it easier and more affordable to scale up customers’ systems to meet their current or future needs. Powerwall 3 is designed for fast and efficient installations, modular system expansion, and simple connection to any electrical service.
A Powerwall 3 system for whole home backup is designed to store energy from the grid or solar, and power the entire home during a grid outage.
A Powerwall 3 system for partial home backup is designed to store energy from the grid or solar, and can power some home loads during a grid outage. These loads are selected during the system design phase, and the installer configures the system at installation to exclude all other loads from backup.

Key Features
-
Power Your Home, Save Money
Powerwall is a compact home battery that stores energy generated by solar or from the grid. You can then use your stored energy to power the devices and appliances in your home day and night, during outages or when you want to go off-grid. With customizable power modes, you can optimize your stored energy for outage protection, electricity bill savings and more.
-
Storms Happen—Outages Don’t Have To
Keep your home and all appliances powered during an outage. When severe weather is forecast, Storm Watch will automatically charge Powerwall to its maximum capacity to prepare for an outage. When an outage occurs, Powerwall will help keep your solar system running or, if using grid power, will transition your home to stored energy instantly. -
Capture More Solar
With a fully integrated solar inverter, Powerwall can efficiently store solar energy and convert it into electricity to power your home. This means you can capture more of the solar energy your system is already generating during the day and use energy to power your home for free at night. -
Avoid Peak Pricing
Time-Based Control mode optimizes your stored energy. With variable rate plans, you can program Powerwall to use your stored energy when prices spike, saving money over time. -
Earn by Selling
Where grid support programs are available, you can send energy to the grid when demand is high or outages are likely. This supports the sustainable operation of the grid and may earn you credits for the energy you sell. -
Maximum Efficiency, Lower Cost
Powerwall can power your entire home with one unit, making whole-home backup protection more affordable. Each unit is self-contained with an integrated solar inverter for added efficiency, resulting in fewer parts and faster installation. This helps make multi-unit systems more affordable and system expansions easier in the future. -
Energy That’s There When You Need It
Backup protection only works when your backup system is reliable. Powerwall is a home battery system that can be charged from solar panels or the grid and is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and harsh environments with minimal service or maintenance. It can maintain normal operation in cold temperatures, high humidity and flooding in two feet of water. With Heat Mode, Powerwall heats itself intelligently to maintain optimal charge and discharge performance in temperatures as low as -4°F.
-
Charge on Solar
Powerwall backup protection extends beyond the home. You can optimize your stored energy to charge your electric vehicle with clean energy during the day, at night or during an outage. Adjust your system settings to charge exclusively with excess solar energy or share your electric vehicle’s battery power with your home using Powershare to extend your home’s backup support during an outage.
With Powerwall 3 Expansion
Powerwall 3 Expansion is designed for Powerwall 3 owners looking to extend backup duration at a reduced cost. Each Powerwall 3 Expansion unit provides 13.5 kWh of additional energy capacity and can easily be installed with your Powerwall 3.
