400W vs 450W vs 550W Solar Panels

Updated September 30, 2026.

Panel wattage is rated output under standard test conditions. A 550W module produces more rated power than a 400W module, but it is also usually larger and may not be the best fit for a residential roof. The right choice depends on usable area, racking, handling, inverter limits and purchase format.

Quick comparison

Panel class Typical use Main advantage Check before buying
400W-420W Residential roofs and replacement modules Flexible roof layouts and easier handling Dimensions, appearance and inverter compatibility
430W-450W Modern residential roofs and small ground mounts More output per module without moving to the largest format Roof layout, module current and racking span
540W-620W Commercial roofs, farms and ground mounts Fewer modules and electrical connections for a large array Larger dimensions, weight, current and pallet-only ordering

Panel count example

For an 8 kW target, the simple nameplate calculation is about 20 panels at 400W, 18 panels at 450W, or 15 panels at 550W. The 550W design does not automatically use less roof area because each module is larger. Compare total module dimensions, not just count.

Residential projects

Most home roofs favor the 410W-450W class. These modules balance output with roof geometry, fire setbacks, vents and dormers. Full-black models may also provide a more uniform appearance.

Commercial and ground-mount projects

Large open areas often benefit from 550W and higher modules. Reducing module count can reduce racking points and connectors, but designers must check higher module current against inverter MPPT limits and calculate string voltage for local minimum temperature.

Wattage is not efficiency

A larger module can have higher wattage without having higher efficiency. Efficiency describes how much power is produced from a given area. When space is limited, compare efficiency and dimensions together.
