Monofacial panels produce power from the front surface. Bifacial panels can also convert light reaching the rear side. That additional production depends on the installation, so a bifacial module's potential gain should not be treated as guaranteed output.
Where bifacial panels work best
- Ground mounts with light-colored gravel, concrete or reflective membranes
- Carports and canopies with open rear exposure
- Commercial flat roofs where modules are tilted above a bright surface
- Rows with enough spacing to limit rear-side shading
Mounting height, tilt, row spacing, surface reflectivity and nearby shading all affect rear-side production.
When monofacial panels make sense
Monofacial panels are straightforward for pitched residential roofs where modules sit close to dark shingles and rear-side light is limited. They can also offer a lower equipment cost when bifacial gain would be small.
Construction and durability
Many bifacial products use dual-glass construction, while monofacial modules often use glass with a polymer backsheet. Dual-glass construction can improve moisture resistance and mechanical symmetry but may add weight. Always check module weight and the approved mounting zones in the installation manual.
Compare more than the label
| Factor | Bifacial | Monofacial |
|---|---|---|
| Energy collection | Front plus available rear-side light | Front side |
| Best sites | Ground mounts, carports, reflective flat roofs | Pitched roofs and low-clearance mounting |
| Key design input | Albedo, height, tilt and row spacing | Front irradiance and shading |
| Buying check | Weight, glass construction and bifacial rating | Backsheet, warranty and cost per watt |
Which should you choose?
Choose bifacial when the site can expose the rear surface to useful reflected light and the project can take advantage of it. Choose monofacial when the module will sit close to a dark roof or when the lower upfront cost produces a better overall project value.
